When I began writing songs in the mid 80’s, I quickly realized that my favorite topics to write about were God’s grace and mercy, the cross and Heaven. These themes run through many of the ten songs in The Christian Gossip Show as well as the theme song for the book. One of the early songs I wrote is called Born Again and I Know It, and it’s included in episode #7. I still get amused when I think about how I had to stop and ask the Lord to forgive me for the mindset I had when I started it. You see, I had a bit of a defensive attitude as I began writing this particular song. A friend and I were leading a new members class at our church. During one session, a fellow Christian had joined us who had come from a background where he had become convinced you could lose your salvation, even after becoming a true believer. Since we were sharing scriptures about the security of genuine believers, he became quit argumentative about the matter. We politely shared the appropriate scriptures like Romans 8:38-39, which tells us that nothing can separate us from God’s love. In 1 Cor. 15:54-57, we see that Jesus’ death on the cross robbed sin of the ability to keep us from God, because the penalty for sin of eternal death has been taken away in the life of true believers. Heb. 7:25 tells us that Jesus is always interceding for us to the Father, completely saving us. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit, guaranteeing our inheritance of eternal life. Other scriptures like 1 John 5:13, Phil. 1:6 and Rom. 6:10 also speak to how we can know with assurance that we are saved for eternity once we accept Jesus as our Savior by trusting in his sacrifice on the cross as payment for our sins. Our lively discussion came to a conclusion and after I got home that evening, still feeling a little defensive about having my confidence concerning the matter challenged, I had the thought cross my mind–well, I’m born again, and I know it! That thought became the “hook line” for a new song. When I realized it was going to become one of my favorite songs, I ask God to forgive me of the inappropriate attitude I had when I began the song. I quickly sensed his forgiveness, and He has allowed the song to be a blessing to myself and many others over the years, as Step of Faith, a gospel group make up of our friends, sang it just about everywhere we went during the years we were together. As you read the words to this poem, adapted from the song lyrics, know that there is nothing you can do to earn a place in Heaven, it’s all about what Jesus did for you. And by accepting His free gift of salvation, you are guaranteed a permanent home there.
Born Again, And I Know It
When Jesus went to Calvary
A miracle took place,
He sanctified forever,
Redeemed us by His grace.
He offers it freely
For all to receive,
Salvation for those who will believe.
There is wonder workin’
Power in the blood that Jesus shed.
Power to bring forgiveness
And raise the dead.
One day I’ll go to Heaven
To walk the streets of gold,
It is the greatest story ever told.
I’m born again and I know it,
Covered by the blood.
Sins have been forgiven
Beneath the cleansing flood.
On my way to Heaven,
To look upon His face.
And all because of His amazing grace.
Are you on your way to Heaven because of God’s amazing grace? ‘Til we meet again, may the Lord bless you in a surprising way! Nancy
